Head-shaking nystagmus

چکیده
Head-shaking nystagmus. Head-Shaking Nystagmus (HSN) is a latent spontaneous vestibular nystagmus provoked by rapid passive head shaking around a vertical axis. HSN is not specific in distinguishing peripheral hypofunction from more central vestibular imbalances. This test is an excellent bedside test for detecting unilateral vestibular hypofunction but further rotatory and caloric testing will be necessary to clarify the patient’s condition.

Patterns of spontaneous and head-shaking nystagmus in cerebellar infarction: imaging correlations.
Horizontal head-shaking may induce nystagmus in peripheral as well as central vestibular lesions. While the patterns and mechanism of head-shaking nystagmus are well established in peripheral vestibulopathy, they require further exploration in central vestibular disorders. To define the characteristics and mechanism of head-shaking nystagmus in central vestibulopathies, we investigated spontane...

OBJECTIVE To document the resolution of oscillatory head movements following surgical realignment of the eyes in children with infantile esotropia and nystagmus. METHOD Retrospective review of 3 children who had infantile esotropia, nystagmus, and unexplained head shaking or head nodding. RESULTS Strabismus surgery restored ocular alignment and produced resolution of the head shaking in all...
متن کاملHead shaking and vestibulo-ocular reflex in congenital nystagmus.
The authors investigated the mechanisms underlying the head shaking shown by some patients with congenital nystagmus (CN). In order to improve visual function by head shaking, a patient with CN must have some visual acuity loss due to retinal image motion created by the nystagmus; an abnormal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR); and the head shaking must be correlated with the nystagmus. The authors ...
متن کاملTilt suppression, OKAN, and head-shaking nystagmus at long-term follow-up after unilateral vestibular neurectomy.
The functional status of the velocity storage mechanism was studied in patients at long-term follow-up (2 to 4 years) after unilateral vestibular neurectomy. The time constant of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VORtc), the effect of head tilt on postrotatory nystagmus, optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN), and nystagmus after rapid head shaking were studied in 10 patients. In agreement with previous...
متن کاملHead-shaking nystagmus in lateral medullary infarction: patterns and possible mechanisms.
OBJECTIVE Horizontal head shaking at 2 to 3 Hz can induce nystagmus in patients with central as well as in patients with peripheral vestibulopathy. However, the characteristics and diagnostic value of this post-head-shaking nystagmus (HSN) have not been studied systematically in central vestibulopathy, and little is known of the mechanisms involved. METHODS We analyzed spontaneous and HSN and...
